As a freebie, the Railways will be providing free Wi-Fi service in 100 stations. Government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative is taken very seriously by railways.

Kollam from South India was the 100th station. The initiative started with Mumbai at the beginning of the year. Mumbai Central – a station in south Mumbai was the first in being a Wi-Fi station.
Later on, this initiative was carried out in other stations like Bangalore, Howrah, Barelli, Bhubaneshwar, Kanpur, Mathura, Aligarh and Varanasi. Initially, all busiest stations were covered in the plan with the help of technology giant-Google.
This partnership with Google came into existence in September 2015 under the project name ‘Nilgiri’. This project will be carried out in phase wise manner. Google’s fiber technology will be used for this project. Under this technology, speed up to 1 Gigabits per second can be generated.
This technology is already employed in the USA. This technology was launched way back in 2010. Through this technology, one will be able to use Wi-Fi connectivity in selected routes in a moving train as well. This is an exciting value proposition which will be offered to travelers to make their journey special.
In next year, the railways have an ambitious target of covering 400 stations with free Wi-Fi. This will have a very real impact in the brand image of ‘Indian Railways.’
Over 10 million travelers will get benefited by this initiative. In fact, close to 1.5 million users have already used the free Wi-Fi facility in 19 stations in India with more than 1 Lakh users already using it within a week.

For this, they can go to rail wire.co.in site. On the website, you will have to enter the mobile number and click on receive SMS link. You will get an OTP. Once the OTP has entered, you are connected online.
